Who Makes Medical Decisions for Kids?
As we approach the general election, a key issue for families in Texas is who gets to make medical decisions for children? That should be a straightforward question with an easy answer. Families should make those decisions, not the state.
However, as we saw in the last Texas legislative session, there are many who believe that the government or doctors should be able to overrule families in those kinds of decisions. We expect to see efforts in the legislative session next year in which the rights of families to make those decisions are limited as we saw last year.
We continue to work to change the law to protect innocent families from CPS overreach and harassment that impacts thousands of Texas families every year.
In Canada we are seeing even more dramatic attack against families as the government-controlled health care system seeks to adopt new protocols for euthanasia of children even against the parents’ knowledge or will.
Canada’s position has not been without opposition, but the country continues to move away from traditional support of patients and families.
It is clear that the traditional support of families in making decisions for their children with regard to medical decisions is under attack by statists who believe that the state is better qualified than parents to make such decisions.
THSC is prepared to fight for the God-given fundamental right of parents to raise their children as they see fit in the upcoming session. However, our ability to do so successfully depends on who is elected in the general election.
Please vote and encourage your family, friends and church friends to do so as well and vote for pro-family candidates. Our liberty is hanging in the balance.
Please go to our website to find candidates that THSC has endorsed who support liberty. Check out our friends at Texas Right to Life, Empower Texans and iVoterguide.com and vote. It is the first step to defend our liberty to raise our children as we see fit; at the national level and in Texas.

Vote to Protect Freedom
In the past, the homeschool community has been blindsided by legislation, city ordinances and other actions taken by government officials directly threatening our freedom to raise our children as we see fit. Those actions cause uncertain times and are often genuinely scary.
I have learned that these experiences happen because we have failed to educate or elect people who share our values. Leaders must recognize that families have a God-given right and calling to raise and direct the education of their children.
Elected officials who act to restrict our freedom have not been educated or they deny that families should have this freedom.
That is why THSC spends so much time and energy focusing on elections at every level. If we elect those who support families and their right to raise their children, we can successfully defend our freedom when (not if) it is attacked.
I have written about the many efforts across the country this year to restrict the rights of families who choose to teach their children at home. That effort has been made here in Texas as well.
Early voting begins this week and I want to emphasize how important it is for every freedom-loving person to go to the polls and vote. About half of the total vote will be cast during the early voting period. It is critical that everyone vote.
People fail to vote for many reasons. However, early voting makes it easy to vote and to help elect people who support family rights.
The direction of our country depends on the results of this election and the same is true for the great state of Texas. During the next legislative session, when we are confronted by someone who files a bill to restrict our homeschool liberty, it could already be too late. Although we can fight such a threat tooth and nail, it could have been stopped entirely by voting for candidates who support freedom for homeschool families.
Please go to our website to find candidates endorsed by THSC who support liberty. Check out our friends at Texas Right to Life and Empower Texans. Also visit iVoterguide.com and vote this week. It is the first step to defend our freedom to raise our children as we see fit, at the national level and in Texas.

High Stakes in November Midterm Election
The historic nomination of Justice Brett Kavanaugh was ugly. Screaming mobs sought to intimidate and harass senators and their staffs. Sen. Collins has received vicious messages as a result of her vote to confirm Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh, however, was confirmed and sworn into office to begin his service on the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS).
Leading Democrats are saying that should they retake the U.S. House, they will re-launch investigations into Kavanaugh and perhaps instigate impeachment actions as well. Many have questioned the authenticity of senate Democrats’ fervor on this issue, describing the proceedings as mere partisanship; particularly in light of how Dr. Ford’s testimony was held in private for several months before being leaked to the public, contrary to her own wishes.
Accusations of bad faith against the Democratic members have also been precipitated by the lack of corroboration from key witnesses named by Dr. Ford and in the recent FBI investigation. Notably, calls for impeachment were made against SCOTUS Justice Clarence Thomas based on strikingly similar allegations during his nomination process.
On both sides of the political aisle, and even globally, it is widely perceived that the Kavanaugh hearings were a national spectacle motivated by the mob mentality that has overridden American politics.
The midterm elections in November will likely bring out otherwise disinterested voters angry over the Kavanaugh hearings and motivated by threats of impeachment proposed by Democratic senators.
In Texas, the stakes are high as well. Sen. Cruz, a longtime and unapologetic defender of homeschooling and the right of families to raise their children, is being challenged by progressive U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke.
O’Rourke has repeatedly opposed increases of academic freedom for families during his time in Congress. With the national push for homeschool regulation promoted by the national media, homeschoolers should be legitimately concerned by the possibility of O’Rourke replacing Cruz in the U.S. Senate.
The future of our country and state are at risk every election cycle, as is our freedom to homeschool. In fact, the incidences of Texas public schools harassing families withdrawing to homeschool have increased six-fold this year over last year.
The close correlation between this increase in harassment and the push from the national media for more homeschool regulation is impossible to miss. If pro-family candidates lose the Texas legislature or the U.S. Congress, we will indeed face dark days.
We believe that parents should be empowered to raise the next generation of leaders, which is why THSC is Keeping Texas Families Free. Please don’t be apathetic. Vote to join us as we protect our country, our state and our freedom.

You Are Not Helpless in the Recent Outrageous Politics
If you are at all aware of political issues, you have no doubt seen or read coverage of the nomination process of Judge Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. It has been an ugly example of character assassination and what some would call the “politics of personal destruction.”
One of the most obvious betrayals of motives in this process so far has been the way that Dr. Ford herself was treated by the Democratic senators.
After coming forward with very serious allegations, Dr. Ford’s concerns should have been investigated privately for the protection of all parties and to ensure the accuracy of the investigation. Instead, her accusations were held quietly for more than two months until Dr. Ford’s own wishes were sacrificed on the political altar and released publically at the last minute when they would produce maximum political damage to Kavanaugh.
Adding to the shock of recent outrageous politics, Sen. Cruz and his wife were targeted by radical activists and demonstrators at a Washington, D.C. restaurant. His Houston office was also the target of a mail piece that included a white powder; two people were taken to the hospital.
We are seeing an unprecedented level of personal confrontations, attacks and even physical violence by the left against political opponents. In addition, outrageous allegations with no foundation of fact are used for the purpose of destroying reputations and to inflict as much pain as possible to win an election, or in the case of Kavanaugh, to force him out of the process entirely.
Many are outraged as we watch this assault on good people.
Everyone should understand that it is critical to be registered to vote and to vote in the upcoming elections. Should Conservatives lose the Texas legislature, we will likely see an attempt to regulate homeschoolers in Texas (which some of the major Texas newspapers have called for and which other states have just recently fended off as well).
Please share this information with your friends and family and tell them that they aren’t helpless and we have a way to fight back. It is critical that we vote in the upcoming election. Our culture is currently being hijacked by a radical descent into vicious tribalism. The willingness of good men and women to cast their vote, speak up and fight back is our surest defense.
We believe that families raising their children is a God-given right and calling, which is why THSC is involved in electing pro-homeschool and pro-family candidates to both the state and national legislatures. Consider donating today to help us battle for Keeping Texas Families Free!

Parenting is a Special Calling Meant for Parents (Not “Experts”)
Families today aren’t trusted to make decisions that are best for their children. We see it all the time in articles and TV shows.
In many ways, it is the result of the statist view of many in our culture: the government knows best. Many in the government from Child Protective Services to child specialists often distrust or even challenge a family’s view of what they believe is best for their child.
This is even more true when we discuss children with special needs. It is more and more common for families with special needs children to decide homeschooling is the best option for them. Often they come to that decision after years of dealing with difficult school situations and many Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) meetings in which parents feel ganged up on by education “experts.”
In much the same way we saw in the 1980s and 1990s when parents were told they were not qualified or equipped to homeschool their children, today parents of special needs children are told the same thing: to “trust the experts” and leave their kids in an institutional setting.
However, there is a strong, vibrant and growing community of families with special needs children who are homeschooling. It can be done, and many children and families are thriving in the process. Today there are more and more resources to help families who choose this rich and very beneficial educational approach.
THSC believes that families have a God-given right and calling to raise their children as they see fit and that includes parenting children with special needs. In fact, it is a special calling and we praise families for the love, patience and commitment that they express for their special ones!
