One of the things that homeschoolers today and those of 30 years ago have in common is that many, many families have concerns about the heavy hand of Child Protective Services (CPS). In the THSC documentary Taking a Stand in Texas, many of the homeschooling pioneers in the 1980s shared their fear of CPS showing up at their door and wrongfully taking their children.
Even though homeschooling in Texas has grown, and many are now familiar and supportive of the right of parents to teach their children, stories of CPS violating its own policies and the law in dealing with innocent families still abound.
In 2019 THSC defended one of our member families when CPS illegally removed a 4-year-old child with special needs from a homeschool family sparking a six-month-long legal and public relations battle to reunite the child and his family. By God’s grace, we were ultimately successful. For the whole story, go here.
That process was instrumental in shining the light of public opinion on CPS and resulted in the most significant CPS reform in Texas history during the last legislative session.
Now, in response, CPS has adopted new rules seeking to limit “parent advocates and homeschool coalitions” in helping families in CPS investigations. This is not surprising as we heard from some of our partners of a threat by CPS officials recently of a need to limit what our partners and we do in helping families deal with such investigations.
I’m reminded of an old Air Force saying, “When you’re receiving flack it means you are over the target!” Therefore, we will continue our work to Keep Texas Families Free in the New Year!

How can you help stop this? There are two big ways you can help!
Contact your State Representative and State Senator and ask them to demand that CPS repeal these unnecessary and unjust regulations that harm families. Also ask them to consider legislation that would help ensure families in CPS cases receive the legal and practical support that they need.
Secondly, you can join THSC in our mission to keep parents free from harmful regulations that limit their ability to raise their children in the way they see fit.
