THSC and, and our sister organization the Family Freedom Project (FFP), are committed to defending homeschool and parental rights in the legislature.

This past 88th Legislative Session, we worked hard to support good legislation and, just as importantly, to help fix or kill dangerous legislation.

We helped to defeat two terrible pieces of legislation and worked to amend another bill to make it better.

Defeated Legislation:

  • House Bill 956 is legislation that is proposed every year, and, every year we work against the passage of this policy. This bill would have changed the law to allow ANY grandparent to sue ANY fit parent for access or possession of their children and would have resulted in thousands of innocent families across the state having to defend themselves against these legal actions. FFP is opposed to weakening the rights of fit parents because parents are the ones responsible before God and before the law for raising children. Our staff testified in opposition to the bill during the committee process and worked to prevent the bill from progressing in the Texas House.
  • House Bill 3381 would have opened up the door for unnecessary legal battles against good parents attempting to obtain medical care for their children. The bill attempted to crack down on parents and guardians that intentionally falsify medical history for their children. However, the broad bill language would have led to parents making an honest mistake potentially being arrested and charged with a crime. FFP worked with a coalition of other organizations to stop the bill.

Amended Legislation:

  • Senate Bill 52 is now law and is an extremely important protection of parental and caregiver rights. The law requires a state hospital to grant visitation between a patient and an essential caregiver. We worked with the author to ensure that both of a child’s parents could be identified as essential caregivers, rather than just one. This legislation ensures that parents cannot be blocked from visiting their children in the hospital.

These are just a few examples of important issues we are actively focused on and why it is important for organizations like THSC and FFP to continue to work hard to Keep Texas Families Free!

Thank you for your prayers and support.
