The Leeper’s Story

In the 1980s, Texas families faced real threats of losing their right to homeschool as Public school officials across the state charged parents with truancy, claiming homeschooling was not a legal form of education.

Texas Home School Coalition rallied support for these brave families, and advocated for their freedom.

In 1985, the landmark case Leeper v. Arlington ISD began, and over the next nine years, it became the defining battle for homeschool rights in Texas, uniting homeschoolers all across the state.

In 1994, the Texas Supreme Court unanimously ruled that homeschools were bonafide and legal schools.

For Texas homeschoolers, the Leeper decision was more than a court victory—it was the foundation of the freedom we defend to this day.

Today, more than 600,000 Texas children freely homeschool thanks to the heroic actions of the Leeper family and their small band of co-defendants. But freedom is never guaranteed.
