For almost four decades we at the Texas Home School Coalition have been arguing that parents have a God-given right to raise their children as they see fit which includes being able to homeschool them.

We have worked in the courts and the legislature to challenge and change laws that wrongly take this fundamental right from families. We have opposed a culture, especially in public schools that blatantly asserts that government entities whether public schools, CPS, or others are better qualified than parents to make decisions for children.

It has been exciting, therefore, to see the beginning of an outpouring of parents across the country beginning to push back against this culture. The beginning of this movement that we have long been a part of, began during the pandemic when many parents for the first time became aware of what their children were being taught in government schools and those same schools were unyielding and unreasonable in policies taken toward parents.

In a similar way, I have watched with great interest the protests against such policies including the vaccine mandates in Canada in the recent “Freedom Convoy.”  I think that most were shocked to see the heavy-handed response by the government thereof taking people’s basic freedoms and even freezing their bank accounts without any court order or due process.

I was impressed with an interview with Joanna Baron, a Canadian attorney with the Canadian Constitution Foundation on The Daily Signal Podcast. She described Canada as a sort of “placid and prosperous place” and the protests as one against heavy-handed restrictions. She also acknowledged that the invoking of the Emergencies Act was illegal and despicable and is suing the government to prove that and prevent such future action.

She spent time in Texas during the pandemic and shares that while in Toronto there was the most severe lockdown in Texas it was the opposite.   She said there was not an “expectation of being free from state interference.” In America we have “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” but in Canada “the governing principle is “Peace, Order and Good Government.”

Thank God we live in the United States of America and Texas where we have a culture and an expectation of being free from government interference. We must however be vigilant to elect people who share that sentiment if we are to maintain that freedom.
