THSC Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering for THSC is an outstanding way to give of your time to serve the home school community of Texas. THSC is a non-profit organization, and your time and assistance is greatly valued.

Volunteering is also an excellent way to enhance your resumé. THSC has many opportunities for part-time volunteers to serve. Click on the job titles listed below for job descriptions and more information on how you can help.

Events

Perhaps you are a business professional turned stay-at-home mom who wants to keep your skills sharp, a high school/college-aged student who wants to build a strong resumé, or are already in the business community and feel a call to serve others.

Leadership

The Leadership Support team serves home school group leaders by supporting and encouraging them in their dedicated service to the Texas home schooling community.

Membership Website and Database Support

Support and maintain the THSC.org website and CiviCRM membership database functionality and coding. Support needs are divided into Tier 2 and Tier 3. This includes:

Marketing

The THSC Marketing Team strategically crafts the message that THSC presents to public. We create content that goes in our magazines, emails, advertisements, banners, and website. Hours are flexible and during regular business hours.

Public Policy Team

Volunteer with the only public policy team in Texas that is focused solely on homeschooling and family issues. The THSC policy team works on everything from public policy research to election campaigns. It advocates for families by promoting pro-family policies and by working to elect candidates who are dedicated to preserving the liberties that homeschoolers hold dear. Join the team today!

Tier 2 Support – Website Content Editor

  • Create and edit HTML pages on the website
  • Investigate and fix account problems (that the Membership support team cannot fix)

Qualifications

  • WordPress Experience preferred
  • HTML, CSS experience preferred
  • CRM experience preferred

Tier 3 Support – CiviCRM Administrator/Developer

  • Maintenance and creation of custom coding for advanced civicrm THSC features (account panel, support groups listing, ID card download, etc.)
  • Fix any bugs in code that are reported
  • Troubleshoot Civicrm account problems not fixed by Tier 1 and Tier 2 support
  • Maintain database and manipulate database records manually when needed

Qualifications

  • PHP, MySQL proficiency required
  • CiviCRM experience preferred

Events: THSC Booth Volunteers

Volunteer and help man the THSC booth at a conference near you!

THSC attends several home school book fairs/conferences throughout the state, and we are always looking for volunteers who are interested in and excel at direct sales and who desire to support and promote THSC.

Volunteers will gain valuable experience as they work with trained THSC staff members.

Volunteer responsibilities include:

  • Sales, marketing and PR for the Texas Home School Coalition
  • Manning the THSC booth
  • Distributing materials to attendees
  • Selling memberships and merchandise
  • Answering questions about THSC and home schooling in general
  • Volunteers will be expected to wear professional attire.
  • Volunteers must be willing to work the entire conference.

Qualifications:

  • Some experience in marketing and sales is preferred but not required
  • Direct experience with home schooling is also a plus – either as a homeschool student or a homeschool parent

Events: Pre-Event Administration

Most assignments require 1 to 2 hours per week to work on special projects assigned by the Events Department. Responsibilities:

  • Updating, revising, editing, or designing forms
  • Familiarity using Microsoft Word, Excel, PDF programs
  • Performing general administrative duties

Events: Project Leadership for Banners, T-shirts, Flyers, Programs and more

Most assignments require 1 to 2 hours per week to work on special projects assigned by the Events Department.

  • Shopping for thank you gifts, bags, t-shirts, cards, etc.

Event Planner Intern

Texas Home School Coalition is looking for an intern to provide administrative assistance for the THSC events team in support of our organizational mission to promote families’ right to educate and raise their children. This is a one- or two-semester work-from-home internship, ideal for recent homeschool graduates, students taking a gap year or college students.
Skills Training

  • Learn how to function in a remote office setting
  • Utilize collaboration tools such as Google Drive, Asana, etc.
  • Introduction to CiviCRM and event registration platforms
  • Basics of professional correspondence
  • Learning time management in correlation to planning events
  • Working behind-the-scenes on everything from venues and speakers to exhibitors and attendees
  • Learn valuable tips from the Ministry Institute video training series.

Internship Outcomes

  • Highly valuable professional, remote office experience
  • Personal development from Ministry Institute training series
  • Hands-on training with planning and conducting events at various stages.

Requirements

  • High speed internet access
  • Laptop or desktop computer
  • Ability to commit to 5-10 hours per week for duration of internship

  • High attention to detail.

Compensation

  • Interns will receive a stipend for the semester.

Office Team: Customer Service Volunteer Opportunity

Do you have a heart that delights in helping, informing, and encouraging homeschool moms? Want to pass on what you’ve learned through the years and share your vision for the blessings that can come on the home school journey with new home schoolers? If so, THSC is the place for you!

THSC is looking for a veteran home school mom to fill a part-time volunteer position working from home to help answer answer questions sent in to THSC.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Return emails in a courteous, friendly, and professional manner using agreed upon procedures and responses
  • Focus attentively on the needs and concerns presented; demonstrate compassion and send a response in a timely manner
  • 2+ hours a week

There is no better way to understand a job than by actually doing it, and we are looking for motivated teen interns who want meaningful, hands-on work and the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience as an office assistant in a digital office, which is the future of employment.

Office Team: Front Office Volunteer

Periodically throughout the year THSC has volunteer opportunities at our local office. Volunteers help with a variety of tasks to assist our staff when preparing for major events such as our State Convention. Volunteers also assist in stuffing envelopes and preparing large mailings, or they may assist our staff in making phone calls to members.

*Note: Office volunteers will be notified of volunteer opportunities one to two weeks in advance.

Volunteer responsibilities include:

  • Making phone calls
  • Preparing large mailings by stuffing envelopes, etc.
  • Packing supplies and preparing for events
  • Various other office duties

Leadership: Regional Representative

The THSC Leadership Support Manager is the direct link between THSC and leaders of home school support organizations in Texas. Qualified volunteers will serve on a team of home school group leaders with the Leadership Support Manager in the following ways:

  • Serve as a liaison with groups in your region on behalf of THSC.
  • Ensure all groups in your region are acquainted with and served by THSC
  • Network with local groups in your region
  • Contact groups in your region one to two times per year
  • Attend an online monthly meeting with the Leadership Support Manager.
  • Provide feedback and suggestions to the Leadership Support Team.

Responsibilities for Regional Reps might also include:

  • Review the THSC leaders’ guide and provide suggestions.
  • Present to local home school groups on behalf of THSC.
  • Write blogs for home school group leaders.
  • Assist in publication of “The Leader’s Voice,” the monthly leader newsletter.
  • Complete various leadership support team projects as needed.
  • Attend bi-annual THSC staff meetings, if available.

Qualifications:

  • Have served in home school group leadership for at least two years.
  • Provide two letters of recommendation from members of the home school group you lead.
  • Have a flexible schedule.
  • Knowledge of newsletter publication, Excel, and Word is beneficial but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Managing Facebook ad campaigns and budgets

THSC Public Policy Team Social Media Volunteer

THSC is currently seeking a key volunteer who is interested in serving the homeschool community. This volunteer will answer policy-related questions asked by Texas families on THSC’s various social media platforms.

During the 2019 Texas legislative session, THSC’s policy team will be on the ground in Austin working to promote the right of families to raise their children and watching for any threats to those rights.

The social media volunteer will have the opportunity to engage with families, answer their questions about current legislative issues and keep them informed about THSC’s legislative work.

Are you interested in pro-family legislative policy? Consider applying for this position to help keep Texas families informed about policy changes that may affect their freedom. Read below for the qualifications required to apply and a brief description of the responsibilities involved.

The volunteer should:

  • Be at least 18 years old or a high school graduate;
  • Have a good, general understanding of public policy and be quick to learn the details of specific issues;
  • Have a working knowledge of and experience with various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube;
  • Be able to commit to approximately 10 hours per week;

Publications: Volunteer Editor

If you are skilled at refining writing and have a passion for our mission of supporting Texas homeschoolers, consider joining our volunteer editing team.

Responsibilities

  • Substantively edit and proofread content for publication by THSC.
  • Integrate THSC message and optimized keywords into writing when appropriate.
  • Accept as little as one assignment a month or as much as two or three a week.
  • Coordinate work flow with Managing Editor to meet publication deadlines.
  • Meet monthly with editing team to address workflow issues, editing priorities and training.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Associated Press style preferred, otherwise, must be willing to learn AP style.
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • Fastidious attention to detail
  • Computer and Internet connection with proficiency in at least email, MS Word and Google Docs
  • Ability to fact check
  • Ability to work autonomously and meet deadlines
