As 2022 begins, the growth of homeschooling shows no sign of slowing. We’ve mentioned on numerous occasions that homeschooling exploded in 2020 with the Covid-19 pandemic and the responses of the public school systems.

According to the Census Bureau, the number of homeschool students in Texas almost tripled with over 12% of Texas school-age children being taught at home in the fall of 2020. In 2021, those who reached out to THSC interested in homeschooling in the busy month of August increased by 300% over the 2020 numbers.

Now in January of 2022, while we see teacher unions all over the country pushing to limit in-person education in public schools, more and more people are deciding to take the plunge.

A recent study concluded that there were actually health benefits for homeschool students. This study concluded that teenage students who were homeschooled “…got about 75 minutes more sleep per day during the lockdown. At the same time, their health-related quality of life improved significantly”

This confirms what I’ve been saying for many years. The benefits of homeschooling are related to the quality of life based on the fact that families can choose their own schedule rather than being forced to comply with the institutional schedule that is often hard on children and families.

The authors said, “Sleep deficits in adolescents can lead to general tiredness, anxiety and physical ailments. These in turn have a detrimental effect on cognitive functions such as concentration, memory and attention, making it significantly harder to function in everyday life.”

There are other health-related benefits of homeschooling, such as lack of peer pressure to participate in unhealthy emotional or physical activities, no risk of school violence, and the tendency to make overall healthier life choices as adults. Get the statistics and read more about homeschooling benefits.

Just one more reason to choose the flexibility and freedom of homeschooling!
