As we have officially entered the Christmas season, my mind has turned to memories of seasons past and what a joyous time of year it has been for our family.

When we were homeschooling our children, this time of year was awash with learning about our faith surrounding the celebration of Thanksgiving and Christmas. There were many craft projects that connected our faith and “the Reason for the Season.”

We worshiped as a family, made gifts for each other, and enjoyed our time together as we celebrated. I fondly remember one of the projects our family made included large scripture verses painted on plywood signs placed in our front yard with festive lighting. Putting them up and taking them down was part of the “Christmas decoration process” for our family.

Homeschooling was a big part of that experience for our family and for many families over the last couple of years, it has been the same.

Opponents of homeschooling predicted an increase in child abuse last year when most of the public schools were closed and many families were forced to homeschool. That did not happen.

Instead, we have seen dozens of anecdotal stories from families saying that homeschooling has allowed them to slow down and take pressure off the family. That has resulted in the healing of children and families as they have been released from the pressure-packed school schedule that is so hard on the whole family.

One of my children told me he remembered our family time at Thanksgiving specifically, each sharing a few things we were grateful for and decorating for Christmas. He also remembered reading the Christmas story from the Bible on Christmas morning, and enjoying family time around good food.

The homeschool community spends a lot of time on research and data to support homeschooling because of those who seek increased regulation and desire of some to limit families choices regarding education. We should also remember and celebrate the fact that homeschooling can bring healing and restoration to families, as well.

God Bless You and Keep You and have a very Merry Christmas!
