Top 5 Benefits of Homeschooling

Looking back on my family’s 16-year homeschool journey, there are many benefits that I did not anticipate in the beginning.

My children are now homeschooling their own children, and I’m on the other side of the journey now.

From my perspective, here are the top five benefits of homeschooling:

  1. Family Time
    • While families with children in a traditional school setting (public or private) are required to arrange their schedules around the school schedule, homeschoolers get to set a schedule that is best for their family.
  2. Relationships
    • With a flexible schedule, we had more time to spend with our children individually and together.
    • This was a huge blessing in knowing our children and their strengths and weaknesses, academically and emotionally.
    • Our children developed close relationships with each other and this is a blessing that continues today.
    • We were able to integrate our faith in the course of their education, which was most important to us.
  3. Life Direction
    • As we got to understand each of our children’s abilities, talents and interests, we had the flexibility to give them experiences with different jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities.
    • This enabled them to explore things they thought they might like to do in life. These often led to life and career direction.
  4.  Academics
    • Although in the 1980s and 1990s there were not as many academic opportunities for homeschooled students as today, we found that individualized instruction and a focus on each child’s learning style led to academic success.
    • We were able to have them audit community college classes before dual credit classes were offered.
    • Creativity and innovation were rewarded with a rich and balanced education.
  5. Mature Independence
    • Our approach to homeschooling and child rearing resulted in children and later young adults who were, to quote their grandmother, “wise beyond their years.”
    • I’m proud to say that today they are all productive members of society who are successful, well-adjusted and a blessing to all who know them. That is the greatest blessing of all.
