Summer is here and the Texas 87th Legislative Session is over. Although THSC was successful in getting the legislature to pass a historic CPS reform bill that changes the law to protect innocent children and families, most of the focus of the public was on the UIL Equal Access bill.

On Friday June 18, Governor Abbott signed the UIL Equal Access bill into law.

While much of Texas and the country has been focused on the pandemic the last year or so, the ranks of homeschooled children in Texas have grown from 4.5% this time last year to 12.3% this year. That means that well over 750,000 students in Texas were homeschooled this past school year.

According to some polls, this has impacted the opinions that people have about homeschooling. We saw legislators on the floor of the Texas House giving voice to that as they supported the UIL Equal Access Bill.

One of the major questions that face educators today is, “How many of those people who withdrew to homeschool this last year will continue to do so next year?”

While we see many families reaching out to us for resources and information about homeschooling, we also hear numerous stories of families that are not only surviving but thriving in homeschooling in academics and discovering a less stressful family life.

Over the summer, we expect to see more and more families explore the world of homeschooling as the families who are currently doing so share their experiences with their friends and family. This fall, we expect homeschool students will be able to participate in UIL extracurricular activities for the first time in Texas.

Stay tuned. The future for homeschooling in Texas is amazingly bright!

We believe in Keeping Texas Families Free! As homeschooling grows, so does our opposition. Become a THSC member today to help us make sure homeschooling remains free across Texas.
