As the old saying goes, “No man’s life, liberty or property are safe while the legislature is in session.” That’s where the THSC Watchmen become important. The THSC Watchmen are a team of homeschool graduates who serve on THSC’s policy team during the legislative session as legislative analysts and lobbyists.
The team’s name comes from Isaiah 62:6, which says, “I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night.” The THSC Watchmen guard the walls of family rights by tracking bills filed in the Texas Legislature, analyzing them for content that affects Texas families and homeschoolers, and promoting THSC’s priority bills and lobbying the legislature to pass them.
Some of the THSC Watchmen’s most notable past accomplishments have been:
- Passing significant Child Protective Services (CPS) reforms that protect the rights of families to direct the care, control, and upbringing of their children
- Stopping a bill that would have made it easier for estranged in-laws to obtain access to and possession of a parent’s children over the parent’s objections
- Amending a bill that would have allowed CPS to make regular monthly visits to the homes of innocent families who CPS believed to be “at risk” of committing abuse or neglect at some point in the future
- Amending other bills that would have threatened the rights of families, such as one bill that would have changed where children go if they are with an adult who gets arrested.
Would you like to play an important role in Keeping Texas Families Free by becoming a member of the THSC Watchmen team? If so, then good news for you! The applications for the 2021 THSC Watchmen are officially open and will remain open until July 31, 2020.
