THSC is pleased to announce our endorsement of homeschool dad Jason Huddleston for State Representative in Texas House District 88 in the Texas Panhandle region.
The seat for HD 88 is currently occupied by Rep. Ken King, who has consistently worked against pro-homeschooling policy issues in the Texas legislature.
Because of Ken King’s poor record on family rights, Jason Huddleston is running to replace him as the state representative for House District 88.
4 Reasons Not to Vote for Ken King
Here are four harmful votes and positions that Ken King has recently taken:
1. Voted against families’ choice in medical decisions.
Representative King voted in favor of amendment #3 on HB 39, which would have allowed CPS to force all children who came into temporary custody to accept vaccinations without their parents’ knowledge or consent. To be clear, this would have been for children temporarily removed from the home, before a hearing to determine whether the removal was even justified.
2. Voted to ban educational choice programs in Texas.
Representative King voted in favor of amendment #9 to SB 1, which added a clause to the House budget bill to prohibit the use of any state funds to provide families with educational choice programs—something research has shown that 95 percent of homeschool families support.
3. Prevented the passage of UIL access for homeschoolers (the Tim Tebow Bill).
Representative King has consistently opposed allowing homeschool families to access UIL programs through the public school system. In both the 2015 and 2017 legislative sessions, the bill failed to pass the House Committee on Public Education by one vote.
Ken King’s continued opposition to homeschoolers on this point has supplied this one vote that has kept homeschoolers disenfranchised by the Texas education system. A recent poll showed 77 percent of homeschooling families want UIL access—something homeschoolers in 34 other already enjoy.
4. Supported the anti-family leadership of Speaker Straus.
Texas House Speaker Joe Straus and his leadership team have been the single biggest obstacle to the passage of pro-family, pro-homeschool legislation in Texas. THSC has successfully worked with legislators all across the political spectrum. However, Joe Straus has repeatedly led a war on good policy such as the pro-family reforms championed by THSC.
Speaker Straus has managed to keep his power through the support of other moderate and liberal state representatives. Notably, Ken King has proven himself to be a dependable co-conspirator with Speaker Straus and has consistently helped him kill good, conservative, pro-family reforms.
The Pro-Family Alternative: Jason Huddleston
In contrast, Jason Huddleston is a homeschool dad committed to conservative reform, who believes that families should be able to make their own decisions about how their children should be raised and cared for.
“It is my belief that parents have the authority over their children and are in the position to make the best decisions for them.”
— Jason Huddleston, Candidate for State Rep. HD 88
THSC is working hard to change the culture of voting in the Texas House to support the right of Texas families. Jason Huddleston is the kind of dependable leader that homeschoolers can count on to champion family rights and values in the legislature.
