The Tim Tebow bill would give homeschoolers access to more extracurricular options by allowing homeschool participation in all University Interscholastic League (UIL) activities and programs. Thirty-five other states currently allow similar access, but Texas doesn’t.
So why do families need the Tim Tebow bill? Each family’s situation is different. Here is what Kelle has to say about her family:
Kelle: Homeschool Mom of Four
Each of our children has their own interests including soccer, music, speech, but of course they are interested in other activities as well, including a local nearby science fair that’s competitive, a robotics team, a local nearby debate team …
My son is also an accomplished, highly-ranked violinist at 13. We went to the local middle school which is five houses down from our house and were told that he could not participate in the local orchestra program because he is homeschooled.
We spend about 600 hours per year driving and we spend tens of thousands of dollars a year just for those extracurricular activities … Texas homeschooling families should be able to participate in UIL activities no matter their geography or their ability to pay for extracurricular programs.
