January 6 = 12th Day of Christmas

wisemen2Another fun piece of trivia, just in case you ever wondered.

"The Twelve Days of Christmas is probably the most misunderstood part of the church year among Christians who are not part of liturgical church traditions. Contrary to much popular belief, these are not the twelve days before Christmas, but in most of the Western Church are the twelve days from Christmas until the beginning of Epiphany  (January 6th; the 12 days count from December 25th until January 5th). In some traditions, the first day of Christmas begins on the evening of December 25th with the following day considered the First Day of Christmas (December 26th). In these traditions, the twelve days begin December 26 and include Epiphany on January 6.

"The origin and counting of the Twelve Days is complicated, and is related to differences in calendars, church traditions, and ways to observe this holy day in various cultures (see Christmas).  In the Western church, Epiphany is usually celebrated as the time the Wise Men or Magi arrived to present gifts to the young Jesus (Matt. 2:1-12)...."

StJudesCardCards, that is...

Do you hate to just throw away all those beautiful Christmas cards you received? Here's a way to use them as a service project in your home school. Your children could even collect them from others.

St. Jude's Ranch for Children is a non-profit, non-sectarian home that helps abused, abandoned and neglected children of all races and faiths at their Nevada and Texas (near San Antonio) locations. They collect the fronts of greeting cards (both holiday and all-occasion), and the children recycle them into new ones, which they sell for special activities. You can send them your old ones and purchase their recycled cards as well.

About this time, the school year can become dreary. We have passed through the excitement of a new school year, the winter months, and the holidays. The kids have had time to grow tired of school, and we are beginning to wonder (some days with panic) if we will complete all we hoped to before the late spring or early summer days are upon us.

Why do the doldrums set in? Why do we question our decision to homeschool or think we just cannot do the job well enough? Ironically, I believe that it is home school's greatest asset that is our greatest obstacle-our freedom.

Freedom is rather frightening. We naturally want rules, regulations, and boundaries to make us feel safe-so we know (or think we do) exactly what to do, when to do it, and how we compare to others doing the same thing. We rely on external measurements because we want to do things "right," and organized school (institutional school, whether public or private) seems to have the method perfected.
