THSC Member Family Harassed by SSA

When a member family was being repeatedly harassed by the Lubbock office of the Social Security Administration (SSA), Tim Lambert wrote a letter reminding that office of the SSA’s own legal opinion on the matter of home schooling.

Seton Hospital’s Discriminatory Policy

Recently a home school graduate applied for a job position at Seton Hospital and was in the hiring process when Seton contacted him regarding his home school diploma. The hospital stated they were unable to complete the hiring process because they could not accept his diploma as a valid confirmation of graduation. Tim wrote a letter confirming the validity of home school diplomas in Texas.

Crosby ISD Threatens Member Family with Truancy

When a member family attempted to withdraw their daughter from Crosby ISD in the manner recommended by the Texas Education Agency, school officials harassed the family with phone calls, undue requirements, and threats of truancy. Tim Lambert assisted the family by writing a letter clarifying the law in this case and urging them to remove the child at issue from their rolls immediately to avoid further action against the school and the district.

Helping Those Who are Adopting to Home School

THSC recently sent a letter to Waco CPS, assisting a family from THSC Association. This member family was in the process of adopting a special needs child. Even though the family had plans to home school once the adoption was final, CPS was requiring them to send this young girl to public school where the family felt her physical needs were not being met. Tim wrote a letter in support of a waiver that would allow the family to school this child at home pre-adoption.

Special Needs Child Denied Benefits

Tim Lambert wrote a letter for a member family whose special needs child was being considered for Social Security benefits. Regardless of information given to the Social Security Administration by the parents regarding their child’s education, the SSA continued to categorize the child as a non-student. Tim restated the Social Security Administration’s own policy and confirmed that this child was, in fact, a full-time home school student under Texas law.

Letter to Ft. Worth CPS

Many times families who are adopting through CPS are forced to place the adoptive child or children in the public school system even if they intend to home school once the adoption is final. One of our member families found themselves in this exact situation with a special needs child they are in the process of adopting.

Tim wrote a letter to the CPS employee involved in this particular case to educate him on CPS’s policies regarding home schooling as a valid option and to reinform him regarding an avenue for adoptive parents to seek a waiver that would allow them to home school prior to the finalization of the adoption.

Common Thread of Bias

THSC encountered yet again another college that was attempting to require home schoolers to present notarized high school transcripts, and again, Tim wrote a letter to Weatherford College clarifying that notaries in the state of Texas are not even allowed to notarize school transcripts and informing the college that their policies and practices were unlawful and biased toward home schoolers and needed to be corrected immediately.
