Almost 20 years ago, the Texas Supreme Court affirmed the right of parents to home school in Texas. Since then THSC has worked to further the cause of home schooling, making Texas one of the most home school-friendly states to date. Texas home schoolers have benefited from the fruits of our labor, and we need you to join us in protecting those fruits.

Being a non-profit organization, THSC receives its financial weaponry directly from the citizens whom it defends. Parents are blessed to be able to home school in Texas, but the battle to protect this legacy of freedom is one of the most mentally and financially draining battles that any organization or individual can undertake.

In 1985 Shelby Sharpe filed a lawsuit against the TEA and every school district in Texas in response to the widespread persecution of home schoolers that was breaking out across the state. THSC led the charge all the way to the Texas Supreme Court, where home schoolers won their case in a unanimous decision. That ruling has since been encrypted into Texas law as a living defense of the rights we have as parents to educate our children.

In 1995 THSC fought to allow parents the right to teach their children to drive. Patrick Barrett, president of the North American Professional Drivers Education Association, concluded, “Without THSC, parent taught drivers education as we know if basically wouldn’t exist.”

This is the last day of our Spring Fundraiser. As we home school with you, it is our privilege to share this legacy of freedom—but we need your help to protect it for the next generation.

The Texas Home School Coalition is the only organization in Texas to take up arms and draft legislation to stop this lawsuit abuse made possible by a loophole in the Grandparent Access Statute. The fight is far from over. After filing SB 1194 with Sen. Donna Campbell and HB 2547 with Rep. Cindy Burkett to close the holes in this law, THSC has received unrelenting opposition from an organization representing lawyers that benefit financially through the drawn-out litigation that accompanies these types of cases.

Unsurprisingly, this organization has sponsored legislation to expand this lawsuit abuse. If passed, their legislation would allow any parent, no matter how fit or loving, to lose his or her children to vindictive grandparents simply because of the choice to home school.

As mentioned in an earlier post, Never See Them Again?, THSC is involved in a court battle to bring rogue CPS caseworkers to justice. These caseworkers essentially kidnapped a Houston grandmother’s grandchildren and kept them for 11 months in order to protect their own job security.

THSC is fighting to vindicate this Houston grandmother and, more importantly, to hold these rogue bureaucrats accountable for violating the law and to show others that there is a price to pay for such abuse.

That’s where you come in. Being a non-profit organization, THSC receives its financial support to engage in this battle directly from the citizens whom it defends. If defending liberty were free, we would have no reason to ask for your help. Unfortunately, it’s one of the most mentally and financially draining battles that any organization or individual can undertake.

With only 15 days left in the Texas legislative session, we need your help. THSC needs $50,000 in order to support our work to defeat these bills that would destroy the very fabric of our homes and to continue our legal battles in the courtroom to protect families.

Your support will make an immediate difference. Please give $50, $100, $500, $1,500, or even $3,500 today.

From balancing family with education to the perfect blend of social activity and life experiences, support group leaders are a special breed. This year’s Support Group Leader of the Year is unlike any we have had before.

“She has devoted years to helping every home school family she knows. Everyone in our group talks about her generosity, how she goes over and above regular service to make our group a friendly and helpful place to meet and support one another.”

“The unusual thing is that they finished home schooling approximately seven years ago yet they continue to tirelessly lead the support group. They both have full-time jobs and lead very busy lives but they manage to make time to run a very active group. She holds monthly meetings, organizes fun and educational field trips, and offers an annual science fair and culture fair, plus many more activities. She writes the newsletter for the group, puts the roster together, and keeps the group running smoothly with little or no ‘drama.’ She does so much and yet always gives the praise to the people who help her. Her husband Trine has played a big part in offering support to her and helping her run the group. They are both remarkable people with a real ‘heart’ for home schooling! I was one of the first members of the group and have witnessed their great leadership skills and positive attitude over many years. They have been instrumental in equipping many home school moms and dads over the years to become leaders of their own support groups.”

Our 2013 THSC Support Group Leader of the Year, from the Home and Values Educators’ Network (HAVEN), is Trine and Jamie Miranda.

After the divorce, Wesley Brace opted to home school his young daughter, Alex. For him, this was the best way to invest in her life. His former wife, however, disagreed. She believed that home schooling would make Alex “weird” and she filed for full custody.

That was twenty years ago. Because of your partnership and support of THSC, we were able to join Wesley in the fight for his daughter and the suit failed. Alex has since blossomed into a woman of God and has become another home school success story.

This Spring being Texas’ 83rd legislative session, THSC, more than ever, is working with families in similar situations. We have even taken on a volunteer team of six home school graduates to lobby at the capitol. But without the support of the homeschool community, even THSC’s ability to simply defend the freedoms we have to raise our children, would be crippled.

Between now and May 17th THSC needs $50,000 in order to continue our legal battles to protect families in the courts and to fix broken laws in the Texas Legislature. Please consider supporting THSC monetarily and with your prayers.

In August of 2009 Theresa Allen contacted CPS to protect her grandchildren from the unsafe and illegal environment to which they had been exposed when visiting their mother’s home. When the caseworker missed the deadline for investigating the case, CPS workers took the law into their own hands and told Theresa, “You will never see your grandchildren again.”

On December 4, 2009, a CPS caseworker forced her way into Theresa Allen’s home and removed Theresa’s grandchildren, without accusation and without court order, in order to protect her position after missing the investigation deadline for Theresa’s case. Theresa called the CPS program director in a desperate attempt to discover what was going on. She was informed that “pulling rank” in CPS was not acceptable and that they were about to “show her what happens” when people cross CPS.

Theresa Allen waded into an 11-month financial nightmare as she fought to regain possession of her grandchildren from the rogue department. CPS battled fiercely to discredit Theresa and threatened that they would adopt her grandchildren out to strangers so that she would “never see them again.”

After nearly a year of litigation, and not even so much as an allegation of abuse against Theresa, CPS lost the case, and Theresa’s grandchildren were returned to her. THSC has since continued the battle by filing suit against the CPS workers, who not only lied to the court and illegally removed Theresa’s grandchildren from her home but are all still employed by CPS today.

The judicial branch is far from the only avenue through which our rights are under siege. It’s been said, “No man’s life, liberty, or property are safe while the Legislature is in session.” Every spring that the Texas Legislature meets is fraught with peril. This year has been no exception.

For the last 105 days the THSC has fought off attempts from the legislature to destroy not only the right to teach our children at home but also our fundamental right to direct the care, control, and upbringing of our children. Here are just a few bills that we’re fighting against.

House Bill 1444 and Senate Bill 303 turn doctors into executioners. These bills allow doctors to place “do not resuscitate” orders into the medical files of sick children that no one but a panel of doctors could remove. Neither the child nor his or her parent can veto the death sentence. Sadly, a notable pro-life organization has made a political “pact with the devil” and supports the bill.

House Bill 393 and Senate Bill 1148 allow intact families to lose their children simply because they home school. The bill will enable malicious, wealthy in-laws to take away children from normal, intact families.

One of the most notable aspects of human liberty is that it is one of the most widely sought for, desperately defended, and ultimately costly possessions in existence. THSC spends hundreds of thousands of dollars in defense of these liberties, and between now and Friday, May 17, THSC needs an additional $50,000 to continue to lobby this legislative session and to continue our legal battles in the courtroom to protect home schooling families and the rights of parents against government encroachment.

God has been faithful in providing resources so far, and we fully expect that He will provide what we need. Please join us in prayer for our work, our staff, and the necessary funds to continue the task that God has given us. As some have said, “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.”

Your support will make an immediate difference. Please give $50, $100, $500, $1,500, or even $3,500 today.

THSC would like to congratulate Junior American Citizen Laurel Robinson, a home school sophomore, on winning first place in the state of Texas for the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF)! The title of the essay is, “How Did the Faith and Courage of Christopher Columbus Give to Mankind a New World?”

Laurel recently traveled to Houston to the DAR State Convention to receive her award. Approximately 191 Junior American Citizen chapters participated, with some chapters submitting more than 100 entries. The annual contest is open to students in grades 9-12. Laurel’s essay will go on to nationals for a possible scholarship opportunity and a trip to Washington D.C.

Thank you, Laurel, for representing our home school chapter of Junior American Citizens with an awesome essay!

Texas home schoolers brought home top honors from the National High School Moot Court Competition once again. They competed against public and private school students from all across the country in simulated appellate court proceedings. Moot court tests students’ reasoning and oral advocacy skills, as well as their understanding of the judicial system and Constitutional law.

More than 100 students competed in preliminary rounds on the Washington College of Law campus in Washington, D.C. The next day the top 32 advocates, including all seven members of the Texas home school group, advanced to argue in the D.C. Federal District Courthouse. The students responded to intense questioning from a panel of judges during their oral arguments.

This year the Best Respondent title goes to Adam Gonzales and Best Petitioner is Isaac Sommers. This is Isaac’s second win in as many years. Other finalists include:

Joshua Upham – Finalist
Hannah Vecseri – Semi-Finalist
Thatcher Townsen – Quarter-Finalist
Greg Guggenmos – Octa-Finalist
Angelle Halvorson – Octa-Finalist

All of the students also compete in NCFCA Speech & Debate, which has helped refine their reasoning and public speaking skills. They were coached by Robert Sommers and Melanie Corley. Congratulations to these students!
