Legislative Issues

THSC advocates for families on any issue that affects the God-given right and the responsibility of families to raise their children, which we believe is the foundation of the right to homeschool. For this reason, THSC is often involved in issues related to Child Protective Services (CPS), family law, medical consent, and other issues.

In past legislative sessions, THSC has fought for equal college admissions opportunities for homeschoolers, protections for homeschool families involved in CPS cases, family rights in custody cases, and opportunities for homeschoolers to participate in extracurricular activities through the University Interscholastic League. THSC Watchmen Team

In 2011, Paul Hastings, THSC’s Director of Public Policy at the time, was the only legislative liaison for THSC. He actively worked with THSC President Tim Lambert to monitor and testify on various pieces of legislation.

After the 2011 legislative session, THSC decided to strengthen its legislative capabilities by recruiting a team of five homeschool graduates to help Paul and Tim defend homeschooling and family rights. This team would become known by the Texas homeschool community as the THSC Watchmen.

Every single legislative session, the THSC Watchmen work tirelessly to protect the rights of homeschool families. The THSC Watchmen program presents homeschool graduates with opportunities to develop important skills while serving the homeschool community and protecting families in the Texas legislature.
