Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering for THSC is an outstanding way to give of your time to serve the homeschool community of Texas. THSC is a non-profit organization, and your time and assistance is greatly valued.

Volunteering is also an excellent way to enhance your esumé. THSC has many opportunities for part-time volunteers to serve. Click on the job titles listed below for job descriptions and more information on how you can help.

Communications Team

Help THSC maintain a virtual presence that is professional, easy to find, up to date and contains accurate information for Texas homeschool families.

Events Team

Perhaps you are a business professional turned stay-at-home mom who wants to keep your skills sharp, a high school/college-aged student who wants to build a strong resumé, or are already in the business community and feel a call to serve others.

Front Office Team

Live in or near the Lubbock area? Enjoy working with other people to accomplish a task? Want to give back to the homeschool community? Then volunteering at the THSC office may be just the thing for you!

Leadership Team

Marketing Team

The THSC Marketing Team strategically crafts the message that THSC presents to public. We create content that goes in our magazines, emails, advertisements, banners, and website. Hours are flexible and during regular business hours.

PAC Team

The THSC Political Action Committee (PAC) Team exposes corrupt judges, acts as a watchdog against questionable politicians, and creates home school legal policy. Hours are flexible and during regular business hours.




Communications Team: Volunteer Statistical Analysis Assistant/E-Stats Analyst

Ever wanted to learn the ins and outs of analyzing e-communications? Do you have experience in math or science? Are you familiar with Microsoft Excel?

Responsibilities of e-stats analyst:

  • Read various Excel Worksheets
  • Compute click rates and provide summations
  • Enter Data into an Excel Spreadsheet
  • Extrapolate Potential Website Trends
  • Identify content types based on demographic appeal, age, location and content
  • Assigning a content type identifier to each link within specified E-communications
  • Quantify click rates for given content types
  • Graph and plot results

Qualifications of e-stats analyst:

  • Experience or working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Familiar with THSC e-publications particularly weekly e-newsletters
  • Enjoy interesting articles related to homeschooling
  • Enjoy math and math related skills
  • Understand how to graph and plot data points
  • Able to calculate sums & percentages, multiply, divide and subtract
  • Interest in learning about demographics, non-parametric tests and the wilcoxon matched pairs test to apply to the data provided

Information THSC hopes to collect:

  • What content is appealing to reading so they follow through with clicks to full articles?
  • Are there key words and phrases that appeal to users?
  • How many e-readers go to the website?
  • What are the click paths of various types of visitors/readers?
  • What content do people want to see more of in our e-publications?
  • Can we offer readers more choices in their e-communications subscriptions?

Events Team: THSC Booth Volunteers

Volunteer and help man the THSC booth at a conference near you!

THSC attends several homeschool book fairs/conferences throughout the state, and we are always looking for volunteers who are interested in and excel at direct sales and who desire to support and promote THSC.

Volunteers will gain valuable experience as they work with trained THSC staff members.

Volunteer responsibilities include:

  • Sales, marketing and PR for the Texas Home School Coalition
  • Manning the THSC booth
  • Distributing materials to attendees
  • Selling memberships and merchandise
  • Answering questions about THSC and home schooling in general
  • Volunteers will be expected to wear professional attire.
  • Volunteers must be willing to work the entire conference.

Qualifications:

  • Some experience in marketing and sales is preferred but not required
  • Direct experience with home schooling is also a plus – either as a homeschool student or a homeschool parent

Events Team: Pre-Event Administration

Most assignments require 1 to 2 hours per week to work on special projects assigned by the Events Department. Responsibilities:

  • Updating, revising, editing, or designing forms
  • Familiarity using Microsoft Word, Excel, PDF programs
  • Performing general administrative duties

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Writing and proofreading skills
  • Ability to work with several departments

Events Team: Project Leadership for Banners, T-shirts, Flyers, Programs and more

Most assignments require 1 to 2 hours per week to work on special projects assigned by the Events Department.

Responsibilities:

  • Working within a budget
  • Requesting quotes from multiple vendors
  • Placing and following up on orders and delivery
  • Shopping for thank you gifts, bags, t-shirts, cards, etc.

Front Office Team: Front Office Volunteer

Periodically throughout the year THSC has volunteer opportunities at our local office. Volunteers help with a variety of tasks to assist our staff when preparing for major events such as our State Convention. Volunteers also assist in stuffing envelopes and preparing large mailings, or they may assist our staff in making phone calls to members.

*Note: Office volunteers will be notified of volunteer opportunities one to two weeks in advance.

Volunteer responsibilities include:

  • Making phone calls
  • Preparing large mailings by stuffing envelopes, etc.
  • Packing supplies and preparing for events
  • Various other office duties

Qualifications:

  • Friendly and able to work well with others
  • Clear and friendly phone voice
  • Able to understand and follow directions

Leadership Team: Leader Liaison Volunteer Assistant

The THSC Leader Liaison is the direct link between THSC and leaders of home school support organizations in Texas. Qualified volunteers will assist the Leader Liaison in the following ways:

Responsibilities:

  • Research online articles and newsletters for interesting topics concerning leadership.
  • Assist with maintaining an accurate database of support groups and cooperatives.
  • Assist with maintaining an accurate regional directory.
  • Conduct Internet searches for new groups.
  • Conduct yearly updates of the THSC leaders’ guide.
  • Maintain professional appearance and behavior while representing THSC.
  • Attend a bi-weekly phone meeting with the Leader Liaison.
  • Maintain open and frequent communication with the Leader Liaison.

Qualifications:

  • Must have served in support group leadership for at least two years.
  • Must provide two letters of recommendation from members of the support group you lead.
  • Must have a flexible schedule.
  • Knowledge of newsletter publication, Excel, and Word is beneficial but not required.

Marketing Team Volunteer

Responsibilities

  • Managing Facebook ad campaigns and budgets
  • Copywriting Facebook ads
  • Copywriting social media posts
  • Strategizing social media campaigns
  • Brainstorming branding and messaging
  • Weekly marketing team meeting
  • 2-4 hours per week

Qualifications

  • Professionalism
  • Good written communication skills
  • Experience with Facebook and/or Twitter
  • Experience with Google Docs
  • Eye for design
  • Willingness to learn, be corrected, and work on a team
  • Previous marketing experience is a plus

PAC Team Volunteer

Responsibilities

  • Candidate research (ethics filings, supported policies)
  • Grassroots activities coordination
  • Writing press releases
  • Facebook updates
  • Policy analysis
  • Policy creation
  • Data entry
  • Weekly PAC team meeting
  • 2-4 hours per week

Qualifications

  • Age 16 or older
  • Professionalism
  • Political savvy
  • Good written communication skills
  • Experience with Google Docs
  • Willingness to learn, be corrected, and work on a team
  • Previous political experience is a plus

Social Media Team: Volunteer Social Media Assistant

Does sharing and chatting with other homeschoolers on the internet sound like fun? The Social media team is looking for motivated volunteers to help with the THSC Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or Google+.

Responsibilities:

  • Engage with other homeschoolers online
  • Assist in building and maintaining THSC’s social media network
  • Be the eyes and ears of the THSC brand online
  • Help review user-generated comments and posts
  • Help monitor discussion of THSC in social media
  • Assist with social media campaigns

Qualifications:

  • Experience with Facebook or Twitter or Google+
  • Good written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Internet and social media etiquette
  • Professionalism

Web Team: Volunteer Web Content Assistant

Responsibilities of website volunteer:

  • Edit existing pages and create new ones
  • Work with the layout and flow of the site
  • Be a watchdog for any errors in grammar or content

Qualifications of website content assistants:

  • Experience with HTML; ideally, some experience publishing and/or trouble-shooting raw HTML markup
  • High-level website or HTML experience is not required as the job is primarily editing and updating the content of the website, not the design and graphics.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Boldness in making suggestions of “what would work better”
  • Flexible schedule

  • Experience with web graphics; ideally, some design experience and a desire to learn
  • Photoshop experience preferred over other graphics programs
  • Willingness to learn and abide by professional design standards
  • Strong attention to design detail
  • Boldness in making suggestions of “what would work better”
